Page Charges
Manuscripts accepted for publication in Leukemia will incur a page charge of £28 (US$50) per printed page to cover, in part, the cost of publication.

Copyright
If and when a manuscript is accepted for publication it will become the sole property of the Journal. Manuscripts are accepted for review without the understanding that all persons listed as authors have given their approval. Upon acceptance, copyright assignment will be required from all listed authors. Any material published in Leukemia reflects the opinions of the authors only and not that of the Editors and the Publisher.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be typewritten double-spaced on one side of 8 1/2″ x 11″ (A4) paper. Be concise and avoid repetition. The manuscript must be written in proper English and must not have been published previously or concomitantly in another journal. The manuscript, including all items, should be submitted in triplicate in the following format (to hasten editorial processing of your manuscript please enclose a Word for Windows disk copy for the Editor):

  1. Title page should contain the title, authors’ names, name of institution where work was done, running title, acknowledgements for research support, affiliation of all authors, and name, address and telephone number (also telefax number, if available) of the author to whom communications should be directed. A blank space of 5 cm should be left at the top of the title page.
  2. Abstract. A separate page should contain an abstract of no more than 200 words in the style of Nature.
  3. Keywords. A list of 3-6 keywords should be provided.
  4. Abbreviations. Abbreviations and contractions should be defined in the text when first used.
  5. Text can be divided into Sections with the headings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. However, whenever suitable, Results and Discussion should be combined to avoid repetition. When Methods are only briefly described send details on separate pages in triplicate labeled for referees only.’ Commercially available reagents should be accompanied by name of the manufacturer. Personal reagents should be made available to others at the discretion of the authors. Use of subheadings is preferred.
  6. References. Number references consecutively in the order (Vancouver style) that they are mentioned in the text. Enclose numbers in parentheses on the line of type. Cite in sequence all authors’ names and initials, title of article, name of journal, year of publication, volume number of journal, and first and last pages. Use abstracts only to establish priority. Personal communications should mention authors’ names, month and year (a written authorization of the person cited should accompany the manuscript.) Unpublished observations are not to be referenced but inserted in parentheses in the text. (Descriptions of the data are required and should accompany the manuscript in triplicate, labelled ‘for referees only’.) Book references should include all authors’ names and initials, chapter title, name and initials of editor(s), book title, volume, edition, name and location of publisher, year of publication , first and last pages.
  7. Charts, Figures, Tables and Illustrations must carry authors’ names, figure number, and orientation (top). Their size should be large enough to permit reduction as exemplified in a recent issue of the Journal. Figures should not be mounted.
  8. Legends should be typed in a separate page and be comprehensive enough to avoid returning frequently to the text.
  9. Footnotes should be placed on a separate page and numbered consecutively throughout the article.
  10. Color photographs. The cost of printing will be at the expense of the authors and charges will be advised by Nature Publishing Group Specialist Journals at time of receipt of accepted manuscript at the publisher; preliminary details of cost can be obtained upon enquiry to the Editor at submission of the manuscript.
  11. Submission on Disk
Once accepted for publication the final version of the manuscript may be submitted on disk as long as it meets the following criteria:
    1. the manuscript on disk must be the final accepted version
    2. a double-spaced hard copy accompanies the disk and matches the disk version exactly. If the disk version varies to the hard copy, the hard copy will be used
    3. the disk contains text only, excluding tables, figures or graphic files
    4. disks should be 3.5 inches (90 mm)
    5. the preferred programme is Wordperfect for Windows (saved as 5.1); Microsoft Word for Mac; ASCII
    6. tables should be provided in hard copy form as conversion usually makes re-keying and tagging necessary
    7. non-ASCII characters (Greek, maths symbols, foreign accents etc) should be coded in the text eg: <x> and the full key of these codes placed in a separate file (.splextension) eg: <x> represents maths symbol chi squared. This will enable a rapid and full search and replace
    8. avoid using sub-directories/folders for these files, keep them at the top directory level
    9. do not include automatic pagination. Manuscript pages should be numbered by hand on the hard copy version
    10. do not use compression
    11. use endnotes, not footnotes
    12. use double-line space between paragraphs, not first line indent
    13. do not use double-line space between items in lists or references
    14. follow journal style for references, capitalisation etc
    15. all disks must be labelled clearly with journal name/author/manuscript number/file name and programme used.

We do not guarantee that the disk will be used or that it will expedite publication. However, we will ensure that all manuscripts will be handled by the most expedient method. Please ask the Production Controller of Leukemia for further details if necessary, before submitting material on disk (tel: +44 1256 329242; fax +44 1256 810526).

    Electronic Submission of Artwork
To ensure optimum quality please follow these guidelines when submitting artwork on disk:

    1. Macintosh files prepared to the correct size (max width 80mm single column or up to 160mm double column) in Adobe Photoshop and supplied as a TIFF file
    2. other formats which can be accepted are open files (not EPS) of Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand
    3. IBM/PC TIFF files (in graphic format only not document)
    4. minimum resolution for scanned graphics to be 300dpi for tone work and 600 dpi for line work. If any figures have to be produced in colour, save as CMYK and not RGB
    5. if the artwork has been created to the correct size the labelling placed around the illustration should be 8pt Univers. If an illustration has been created to a larger size than that stated, the labelling should be set to the correct percentage for reduction at page make-up
    6. preferred media for delivery: CD-ROM, Optical 600mb or 1.3gb (5.25 inches), Syquest 88mb or 200mb (5.25 inches), Macintosh and PC 3.5 inches floppy disks (up to 1.44mb) or 5.25 inches (up to 1.2mb).

The disk must be clearly marked with journal name/ author/ manuscript number/ file name and programme used and accompany the manuscript to which it refers. Hard copies of the illustrations must be included for identification. Any illustrations containing blots from gels, histochemical stains or pen traces, that have been prepared via a computer programme cannot be reproduced from a laser printout, as this creates a cross-hatched pattern. Such material must be submitted on disk as above, unless unscanned continuous tone originals are supplied.

  12. Proofs. Contributors are provided with page proofs to read for typesetting errors. Important changes in data are allowed, but authors may be charged for excessive alterations in proofs. Proofs must be returned to the publishers within 48 hours of receipt. If proofs are not returned within this time period, the Editor will have the right to publish any article without the alterations.
  13. Offprints. An offprint order form is sent with proofs; 25 free offprints are supplied upon payment of page charges. Additional offprints may be ordered; charges for reprints ordered at a later date are necessarily higher.
  14. Labels. Please provide 3 self-addressed labels for correspondence.
  15. Non commercial reagents should be made available to other scientists under conditions to be discussed with authors.

Business correspondence and enquiries relating to advertising, subscriptions, backnumbers or reprints should be addressed to the relevant person at Nature Publishing Group, Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG21 6XS, UK.
