Macmillan Reference Ltd (Part of the Nature Publishing Group) has launched ‘Embryonic’ ELS, offering a valuable preview of the single most ambitious reference source ever to be published in the biological sciences: the Encyclopedia of Life Sciences.

To be published in 2001, the Encyclopedia of Life Sciences will be a work of unprecedented scope and quality, comprising 4,000 articles, 12 million words and 7,500 illustrations. ELS will integrate current theory, practice and understanding of all fundamental and many applied aspects of the life sciences. Its online format means it will be continually updated, making it a key resource for students, researchers, academic and public libraries and schools in the next millennium.

Users of ‘Embryonic’ ELS will have the unique opportunity to access the ELS database as it evolves during the year 2000. The database currently holds over 2 million words, and users will have continued access as the number of articles increases and as subject areas develop. ‘Embryonic’ ELS does not offer the sophisticated search retrieval facilities, advanced functionality and external links that will be integral to the full product, in 2001. However, it is fully searchable, allowing users to browse the complete hierarchy of article titles and retrieve full text articles where these have been delivered.

ELS’s editorial scope will be broad, with particular emphasis on cell and molecular biology and its relevance to medicine. Core subjects in the life sciences will be extensively covered – biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, plant science, physiology, structural biology and virology.
