Journal of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology

Instructions for Authors

The original manuscript plus three copies should be sent to JJ Cooney (Editor-in-Chief), Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sciences Program, University of Massachusetts, 100 Morrissey Blvd, Boston, MA 02125-3393, USA. Tel: +1 (617) 287 7446. Fax: +1 (617) 287 7474.

Submission of Manuscripts

  • Original Papers should include a summary of 100-200 words and 3-6 keywords, should be divided into sections and should normally not exceed 16 printed pages.
  • Short Communications should provide a concise statement of a preliminary report or significant research contribution, should include a summary of not more than 50 words, and should normally not exceed 3 printed pages.
  • Letters to the Editor should either be on a topic of scientific concern or give comment upon recently published articles and should not exceed 2 printed pages.
  • Review Papers should be critical reviews on subjects of interest to industrial and applied microbiologists. The length of the review article will depend upon the subject.

Articles should be in English, typed double-spaced throughout on pages of uniform size with wide margins down the left-hand side. The type of publication desired (i.e. Original Paper, Short Communication, Letter to the Editor, Review Paper) should be indicated. All manuscripts must conform to the CBE Style Manual for Biological Editors (5th Edn.). Original Papers should conform to a sectional format and include Title, Summary, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments and References. For Short Communications a sectional format is also required.

Authors’ first names and surnames, and address(es) where the work was carried out should be given on the title page, as well as the exact address, telephone and fax number for correspondence. Present addresses when different from those where the work was done should also be indicated, and given as a footnote.

Submission of material on floppy disk
The preparation of your paper and the submission of hard copy to the editor should follow exactly the procedure set out elsewhere in these instructions. If, however, the paper has been prepared using Word Perfect, Wordstar or MS Word, you may also submit to the editorial office your paper stored on disk. This may facilitate handling in the office. The disk should be clearly labelled with your name, the title of the paper and the name of the word processing program, together with the file name under which the paper is stored.

Title
The Title should be brief and informative. Abbreviations and trade names should be avoided. A shortened form of the title should be provided as a running head.

Summary
The Summary should outline, in about 100-150 words, the experimental approach and state the major findings and conclusions of the article. Abbreviations, diagrams and references to other papers should be avoided.

Keywords
A list of 3-6 items (for indexing purposes) should be provided.

Documentation of bioreagents
All bioregaents (ie bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc) must be clearly documented indicating the source, accession numbers, etc. A culture collection can only be indicated if the culture was actually obtained from the depository, not if it was obtained from a colleague.

References
References in the text should be cited by number in square brackets, eg [2,12-15]. Authors will be responsible for the accuracy of references.

References listed at the end of the article should give: first author’s surname and initials, other authors’ names (initials then surname), year of publication, full title of article, name of journal (abbreviated according to the List of Serial Title Word Abbreviations (International Serials Data System, Paris, France)), volume number, first and last relevant page numbers in this order, and for books: first author’s surname and initials, other authors’ names (initials then surname), year of publication, title of the article, title of the book preceded by ‘In:’, first and last page numbers, publisher’s name and location in this order. The list should be in alphabetical order (by first author’s name) and then numbered, eg:

1 Heeschan W and G Hahn. 1982. Quality control of media for Lactobacillus and Streptococcus. In: Culture Media (Corry JE, ed), pp 109-119, GIT-Verlag, Darmstadt.

2 Luthy P, C Hoffman, and F Jaquet. 1985. Inactivation of delta-endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis by tannin. FEMS Microbiol Lett 28: 31-33.

‘In press’ articles may be included in the Reference list but a preprint may be requested for review. Citations of unpublished data or personal communications should appear only in the text parenthetically.

Tables
Tables should be typed on separate sheets with double spacing, numbered consecutively, with Arabic numerals and without vertical lines. A short descriptive title should appear above each table, with any explanation or footnote (identified with a, b, c, etc) below.

Figures
Figures should be submitted unmounted. Line drawings and graphs should be drawn in black ink on white paper. Figures should be designed with the type-area of the column and page in mind. Lettering should be no smaller than 2 mm after photographic reduction. Black and white illustrations should be submitted as sharp prints on glossy paper. They should preferably need no reduction and should include a bar indicating length. Legends should be typed, with double spacing, on a separate sheet.

Color Plates
Inclusion of color plates will be subject to a special charge.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author to be checked for typesetting accuracy and should be returned with the copyright assignment form and offprint order form to the Publisher within 2 days of receipt. No changes to the original manuscript will be allowed at this stage. Extensive changes to the proof will result in publication delay and all costs incurred will be charged to the author.

Page charges
There are no page charges

Copyright
Authors will be asked before publication to assign the world copyright of their manuscript to the Society for Industrial Microbiology. Therefore, all manuscripts submitted must be accompanied by a signed statement that the article is original, is not under consideration or has not been previously published elsewhere and its content has not been anticipated by any previous publication. Authors will be entitled to publish any part of their paper elsewhere without permission, provided the usual acknowledgements are given. The assignment of copyright will not affect subsisting patent rights or arrangements relating to them. Submission of a manuscript will be taken to imply that authors have obtained permission from their employers or institution to publish, if they have a contractual or moral obligation to do so.

Offprints
25 free offprints per contribution will be supplied. Additional offprints can be ordered with the order form sent with the proof to the author.

Business correspondence and enquiries relating to advertising, subscriptions, backnumbers or reprints should be addressed to the relevant person at Nature Publishing Group, Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG21 6XS, UK.
